A medical specialty that uses radioactive tracers (radiopharmaceuticals – ex. I- 131, I-125, Tc-99m, Ga-68, F-18, etc.) to assess bodily functions and to diagnose and treat disease. Specially designed cameras allow doctors to track the path of these radioactive tracers. Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography or SPECT and Positron Emission Tomography or PET scans are the two most common imaging modalities in nuclear medicine.

Nuclear Medicine Imaging uses small amounts of radioactive material, a special camera, and a computer to create images of the inside of your body.
Nuclear Medicine provides information that cannot be obtained using other imaging methods--helping diagnose many types of cancers, heart disease, gastrointestinal, endocrine, and neurological disorders.
Because Nuclear Medicine procedures are able to pinpoint molecular activity within the body, they may detect disease in its earliest stages when it is most easily treated.
